Plastic surgery research: MALIT trial

James is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in Bristol with a special interest in hand surgery, and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol. He will serve on the ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ research committee 2015-2018. James also sits on the research committee for the British Society for Surgery of the hand (BSSH).

James’ main research interest in randomised controlled trials in surgery. With Abhilash Jain (Chair of ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½' research committee), he is chief investigator for the MALIT trial, in collaboration with the University of Bristol (Professor Jane Blazeby). Funding from ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ and the BSSH has allowed the team to appoint a researcher, Zoe Tolkien, at the Bristol Surgical Trials Unit.

The trial was previously awarded “best project” at the national Reconstructive Surgery Trials Network (RSTN), and is being carried out with the support of the British Association of Hand Therapists along with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½, BSSH and the RSTN.

The team are currently looking at national practice in the treatment of mallet finger (a very common injury caused by a tendon injury or a fracture), and designing a national trial to establish the best treatment and appropriate outcome measures.
